The MBS is a list of health professional services subsidised by the Australian Government. There are over 5,700 MBS items which provide patient benefits for a wide range of services including consultations, diagnostic tests and operations.
Established in 2015, the MBS Review Taskforce (the Taskforce) is considering how the more than 5,700 items on the MBS can be better aligned with contemporary clinical evidence and practice, and improve health outcomes for patients. The Taskforce is also identifying whether there are any services that are obsolete, outdated or potentially unsafe.
The Taskforce has established over 70 Clinical Committees to provide it with expert advice about each area of clinical practice that the MBS supports. Over the last 4 years more than 700 clinicians, consumers and health system experts have participated in these committees, providing detailed advice to the Taskforce on how to improve the MBS.
Consultation with stakeholders is an integral part of the MBS review. The Taskforce continues to welcome feedback from stakeholders in order to shape its final recommendations to the Government. If you wish to provide feedback on the MBS Review, you may do so by emailing the Taskforce at [email protected].
After recommendations are made by the Taskforce, the Government considers the recommendations and will often conduct further consultation. To date, on the advice of the Taskforce, numerous changes have been made to update the MBS, which have affected some hundreds of items.
About the Review - includes the Terms of Reference, Taskforce membership, and links to the Taskforce reports, including the Government’s responses to a number of the Taskforce recommendations.
In order to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to provide feedback, the Taskforce reports are published online as part of the consultation process. During implementation of the recommendations, the Taskforce also works with clinical experts from relevant disciplines for each of the reports.
