Commencing 13 March 2020, new temporary MBS telehealth items have been made available to help reduce the risk of community transmission of COVID-19 and provide protection for patients and health care providers.
These temporary items have played a critical role in the Australian Government’s response to COVID-19. They have allowed patients to access essential health care while minimising the risk of community transmission of the virus.
The use of COVID-19 MBS telehealth items by Broad Type of Service is available from

Changes to Medicare Statistics
Medicare statistics are now based on the patient’s geocoded Medicare enrolment address rather than the patient’s enrolment postcode. The availability of geocoded patient information substantially increases the accuracy of Medicare statistics.
Modified Monash categories replace Remoteness Area in recognition that more Health programs are transitioning to MMM from 1 January 2020.
Medicare statistics were revised from 2009-10 onwards for the Annual report. Historical Medicare statistics prior to 2009-10 remain unchanged as geospatial information and Modified Monash statistics are not available for the entire time series.
For more information view the Changes in MBS Statistics report on the Departments website.
